FILM FRIDAYS – HORRIBLE BOSSES, A HORRIBLE COMEDY?

Having not seen the film yet, it’s hard to make a firm decision on just how good it might be but there are already plenty of reviews online that have given the film a mediocre rating and even tagged it as “easily forgettable” (ouch). If you have nothing notable worth doing this evening and want to see for yourself, Horrible Bosses does have at the very least an all star cast, Jason Bateman, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Charlie Day and … read more

FILM FRIDAYS – BAD TEACHER? – NO COCO FOR MTL…

OPENING THIS WEEK There are three films that deserve a mention today but not all attention is good attention. If you haven’t already seen the trailer for Bad Teacher, count yourself lucky. This looks like another one of those awful comedies that most people will go see, just, because it’s a comedy and it’s raining out. Sorry to be biased here but for Jason Segal and Justin Timberlake and their otherwise promising careers, this looks like a horrible movie choice. … read more

MUSIC MONDAYS – HANDSOME FURS – LIVE IN MONTREAL!!!

The list of Montreal based indie rockers doesn’t begin and end with any one artist. The beautiful part to this city is that once you discover one musical gem, you really just discovered several, because the members of one band also play in another band or have a solo or side project etc, etc… and there’s a good chance that this is how you may have already heard of the Handsome Furs. Therefor, at this point it might be a … read more

FILM FRIDAYS – SUPER 8 AND TROLL HUNTING?

OPENING THIS WEEK What’s more intriguing, a film that for the longest time was known only as the “Untitled J.J.Abrams project” or a mockumentary that is about hunting trolls? Super 8 is yet another sci-fi flick from blockbuster filmmaker J.J.Abrams (Cloverfield) and while it likely promises a heavy dose of action and some pretty cool CGI. Its success will depend highly on its ability to surprise audiences because as with most sci-fi films, they are too predictable and quickly flop … read more

FILM FRIDAYS – WILD AT HEART

When there’s nothing new that’s worth seeing, why not look back on the careers of successful actors and see what other films they’ve done? Bet you never would have guessed that Nicholas Cage had starred in more than one credible cult film (the other being Raising Arizona). This film in particular, Wild at Heart, was directed by David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks) and naturally this film also stars Laura Dern (one of Lynch’s most favourable actresses). Cage is now … read more

MUSIC MONDAYS – GRIMES

There’s something haunting about an artist with a name like Grimes, perhaps its the way it sounds when you read it out loud or perhaps it’s the music she makes. Hailing from the greater Montreal area, one might expect either another indie band or some underground drunken punk band with ripped jeans and Mohawks, fortunately it’s really neither. Grimes is a unique blend of wavering vocals and a medley of keys and various other electronic sounding instruments, check out this … read more

FILM FRIDAYS – HANGOVER PART 2

If you haven’t already run out and seen this, maybe you won’t mind saving a few bucks. That isn’t to say that it’s terrible, or that some might find it funny, like all things, it’s subjective. Although for the most part, the general consensus around the film is that it is too much of the same, that it hasn’t progressed, the humor is tired and worn but if you like Zach Galifianakis then you might really, really enjoy it. That … read more

MUSIC MONDAYS – REVERIE SOUND REVUE

Reverie Sound Revue might be one of the more talented indie/pop bands to come out of Canada in the past decade but their success has never come close to what they truly deserve. After having released a short EP years ago, they briefly split apart although their lead singer Lisa Lobsinger continued to perform with Broken Social Scene. Eventually after a few years Reverie Sound Revue pulled it together and released a full length album but to date they have … read more

FILM FRIDAYS – PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (SNEAK PEAK SCENE)

OPENING TONIGHT Some people might have anticipated this fourth instalment of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean and while the series has never ceased to be entertaining, the third one could have done without the fifty foot giant woman who turned herself into crabs -because at that moment, for the first time in the series, the visual effects really took a hard hit. Although for those that were growing tired of Orlando Bloom and Kira Knightly, this latest film features a … read more

MUSIC MONDAYS – MATTA “Release the Freq”

On a lazy afternoon while browsing the internet a friend of ours stumbled upon this video, which as it turned out is a music video for a track called “Release the Freq” by Matta. If you have a weakness for dubstep (or anything with a good beat for that matter) then you should probably give this track a listen, (not to mention that the video itself is visually stunning thanks to director, cinematographer, editor and 3d graphic designer, Kim Holm. … read more

FILM FRIDAYS – Not opening in Montreal today HESHER and everything must go

For whatever reason, there are two really incising films opening this week but there seem to be no show times in Montreal! Talk about getting burned, someone should start a petition! Maybe it’s for the best though, it’s supposed to rain here for the next seven days, so we might as well enjoy the weather today while we can -but before you leave the house you should check out Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a thrashing metal-head in Hesher and comedian/actor Will … read more

MUSIC MONDAYS – Tyler the creator

We’re shaking things up a bit this week with rap artist Tyler the Creator. Having released his first album, Bastard, in 2009, Tyler the Creator still has time to rap with the OFWGKTA collective and produce his latest album entitled Goblin (2011). His presence was recently recognized by the online community, perhaps partially due to his interesting approach to the visual elements in his music videos, in combination with his distinct vocal stylings. Everything from his image to his content … read more
